hang

The magic of the Hang is breathtaking. Book one of the world's most prominent players Michael Colley and hear as he plays mystical melodies and infectious grooves that captivate any audience.

The Hang (pronounced Haung) is a musical instrument which first saw the light of day in Bern, Switzerland in the year 2000 and in the Bernese dialect 'Hang' means ‘Hand’. It is primarily played with the fingers and hands. It is developed and built by the instrument makers Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer (PANArt Hangbau AG). Its convex body consists of a specially hardened steel (Pang) that the Hang Makers originally developed for the construction of custom Steel Pans. On top of the Hang there is a low pitched central domed note called Ding, surrounded by a circle of either 7 or 8 tone fields. The 'bell like' lower half has a round resonant opening (Gu) which can also be played.

Michael has played at the world hang festival for PANArt in Switzerland and headlined last years international HangoutUK Festival in Surrey. He has appeared on Channel 4 TV in a performance on the Amnesty International stage at a London Festival, and he is global Moderator and Administrator for 3 of the worlds top 4 internet forums dedicated to the PANArt Hang.
